Water is a critical component for life but in nature it can be a limiting resource. Adding a pond is a great way to encourage wildlife to your property. However, pond management is more difficult than most people realize—proper pond management takes diligence, work, expertise, and money. Before digging you need to decide:
- how big the pond will be?
- how deep should the pond be?
- what species of wildlife do you want to attract?
- do you plan to fish?
Once the pond is constructed you will need to know how to manage:
- aquatic plants
- fish and other desired wildlife
- nuisance wildlife
- water quality and runoff
This Illinois Department of Natural Resources video introduces new pond construction.
