Sustainable Development
Sustainable development and green building provide housing, office spaces, and community buildings using methods, products, and processes that create structures which are durable, consume less energy, less expensive to operate, conserve resources, and are mindful of the natural environment.
Site development includes building, landscaping, and stormwater management to preserve natural resources. Some basic practices include:
- protecting topsoil and minimizing disruption and damage of existing trees and plants
- orienting the building to capture passive solar heating and cooling benefits
- landscaping with native plants
- following Low Impact Development practices
- controlling erosion
- properly managing storm water
